
According to Fatality Analysis Response Systems (FARS), in 2007, 28,933 people were killed in cars and light transport vehicles. The breakdown went as follows:

There were 12,998 alcohol-impaired fatalities.

From 2006 to 2007, the number of passengers killed in rollovers declined slightly but the number of injuries increased. 54 percent of fatalities were caused by lack of restraints (failing to wear seat belt or car seats and/or defective seat belts and car seats).
